I have been following the entertainment sections in recent months. There have been many news that I find interesting. I would quote one that has been shocking to many.
It is an open secret that Andy Lau has a longtime girlfriend of 20 over years. Although he denies it vehemently, it is evident that this girl has been together with him over the last 20 yrs. In recent months, Andy Lau was spotted at the Ms Zhu's dad funeral. A picture speaks a thousand words. Soon the media started speculating that Andy and this woman were married and even had kids. Due to his idol status, Andy still denied that he had been married. Soon after it was revealed that he was indeed married! Then all the speculation started, saying he had 2 schoolkids and many other rumours. It caused a huge uproar in the entertainment circle and ignited the fans' protests against their idols for lying to them.
True it might have been Andy's fault for not admitting, but do you realise the media is starting untrue rumours and casuing an upheaval in his life? Fans are againstt him, the paparazzi are on him and he has to bear the burden of the families. Thats not forgetting his work as well. Why are there so many rumours about him? In the past, only the rumours about him and Ms Zhu are together. Now all the rumours just come about without any concrete evidence.
This is not all. It was also discovered that another superstar Leon Lai is also married. And the same thing goes about again.
I would quote another incident. A few months, Taiwanese celebrity Show Luo was involved in a scandal on FaceBook. It is claimed he made indecent exposure to the girls he got to know on FaceBook. Then many untrue rumours such as he asked for the telephone numbers for the girls he fancied. These were untrue.
I re-affirm: THESE WERE NOT TRUE!
Why has there been such incidents? Its all because of the reporters who try mislead our perception in things by making up untrue rumours about them. This will serve to raise the interest in the news, in turn raising the magazines' sales. They know people will be interested in such news, hence all sorts of rumours are cooked up to maintain the interest of the public. Furthermore, the magazines are published with the pictures as the main attraction. This will even catch attention to those who are unaware of the incidents and make them pick up to read. Such non verbal communication only serve to mislead our perception and also to boost sales and nothing else.
For myself, I condone such actions and it has led to the destruction of the celebrities' reputation. Whether is it in the past or present, these has led to the downfall of many stars or stars-to-be. It is very wrong because these artistes have strived in the industry for years and one scandal led to their downfall and it is very disheartening to see this. Finally I would like to add, though such scandals make an interesting read, but if it damages the celebrities' reputation, it is a very bad way to do so.
Ok, time to for some magazine read :D

This is one heartbreaking news for Andy's fans lol.
ReplyDeleteIt is also the scary thing about media. It spreads rumours as quick as the speed of lightning and credibility is up to us to think about it.
We can never be 100% sure that the news are true or not but this is what mass media is about. They can tell us what to think about but not what to think.
Ironically, it is such news that attract readers to magazines and that is why the paparazzi buisness is thriving tremendously.
Be a smart reader! =)
HI JUSTIN!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the paparazzi do affect our perceptions. It's like how they will choose and selection only certain information to be published, giving us the wrong idea. But you can't deny that the only way these tabloids can make money, as unlike in Singapore, they have many news publishing companies covering the local entertainment issues.
However, I feel that sometimes such tabloids or news actually increases the celebrity’s popularity. We all watch dramas, where sometimes they portray how some celebrities would cook up scandals to make themselves popular by generating publicity.
So it depends actually on how the celebrities handle the press.

As much as I do not agree on what the paparazzi do to get news (which involved spoiling these celebrities' lives), I am guilty of enjoying such news at times. Okay, fine most of the times. Well gossips are great conversation starters!
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, these reporters are unscrupulous in their means of creating news. However it is also their jobs, sometimes they have no choice in order to help their company survive and also for their rice bowls.
And knowing you to be a fan of Show Luo, seeing your violent reaction towards his supposingly untrue scandal does make me wonder if your affirmation of his untrue scandal is in fact true of biased due to being his fan.
Hello!
ReplyDeletePaparazzi make their worth by scandalizing the lives of the celebrities. The existance of their jobs requires the demand for readers, who like to read gossips of their idols. Thus, we can't really blame them.
However, it is annoying and amusing to see that paparazzis can make scandals out of nothing. Of course, I feel sad for those who are involved in the news. But, if one were to think about it, if the "victim" of the news did not do anything wrong, why should s/he be affected by it?
We can really see how the media is so powerful here! The way it can blow things out of proportion and dissiminate information so quickly! I think Andy Lau could have handles the situation better though. He could have communicated to his fans earlier about his relationship. But i guess what has been done is done. And at least he tries to redeem himself by apologising to fans by his website also known as new media.
