Recently i happened to chance upon one article that caught my eye.
http://www.tnp.sg/printfriendly/0,4139,213645,00.html
This article is about a topless car wash in Singapore. It is actually part of a publicity stunt of a new motoring classifieds website, an one-off private car wash with topless women for a group of lucky winners.
After i read this article, I realised this was the right way to go. Firstly the liberalisation of the society. In the past, these events would have been clamped down by the authorities. Now these activities can be done privately, as long it does not harm the public eye. As we move towards a more liberal society, these acts should not be condoned, though it should be encouraged. It is part of who we are. People are doing this for a living. Besides this is done privately.
What I mus applaud, is the bravery of the car washers involved. It is not easy for them to be doing the car washing with eyes looking at them. However as one girl said, all this is done tastefully so there is no harm for them. As the organiser said, all of this is done in an artistic way.
'The photographs and videos in future will be motoring-centred. There won't be a shot of a girl without featuring a car.' said the organiser.
From this we can see, this is not a sleazy event but a publicity stunt for the motoring website. However, legal issues have been raised, but i think it is unnecessary. It is a 'PRIVATE' event, so only invited guests are allowed. According to the articles, necessary articles have been taken to safeguard the interests of the models.
Definitely, there will be netizens against these acts, like saying it is harmful for underaged kids and so on. It is really how one sees these events. Do consider the feelings of the models involved, for the modelling world is so small, it is likely that they would be labelled as topless car washers. This is what I do not want to see, since this is not a sleazy event, hence we should not label them as such. In the end they would lose their jobs due to the perception of people against them.
Ok, time for a car wash! Oops, i do not have a car!

Hello Justin! I do agree with you that there is nothign wrong with these girls who work simply to earn a decent salary. They do not rob or steal, so what's wrong? But i personally feel that this should not become a phenomenon and lead to undesirable repurcussions such as deterioration of moral values to the younger generation. Globalization of the ameican culture has infiltrated into our culture such that we are all more opinionated, outspoken and less conservative. Hence, there is a slight shift in culture today and we should try our best to teach the younger generation right from wrong. I feel that there are many ways to attract business to earn profits for companies. Exploitation of girls who are willing to work these jobs by going topless simply strips them off of their rights and is unacceptable in my opinion.
ReplyDeletewoah that's like a challenge given to Singapore's or rather Asian Culture. Since we are considered to be more reserved, such event will definitely cause a big hoo-ha over it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if it was to happen in the States or any westernized country, i think they wont even bother to report such news as the citizens there are rather used to it. It is too common for them to even take notice of it.
Indeed, the difference in culture really speaks alot.
Sleazy event? I think they are just making a living so spare them!
HI JUSTIN!
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with you that publicity stunts like this should be encouraged. You emphasize that it was not sleazy several times in your argument, but truth is, it is. There is nothing artistic about a topless car wash. No doubt it is an excellent advertising gimmick. But advertising should never be degraded to such an extreme.
Furthermore, how much can we believe that there was extremely no other means of photographing the girls except the official photographers? What if those 'invited' guests were to whip out their hps for a photo, so quickly, no one even noticed. Imagine if these photos were to be leaked. I think the girls involved should be ashamed of themselves for signing up for this.

I am TOTALLY AGAINST this topless carwash!
ReplyDeleteYou can say I'm being a feminist, but I feel that this event is DEGRADING to us women! If this event was a private one solely for friends and all, I wouldn't have much to comment. But for this case, it was PUBLICISED! How can one agree to this? That women are merely reduced to commercializing tools to agree these horrible men. Furthermore these women are reduced to merely SEXUAL OBJECTS!
You can say this is liberalization of the society, but NO this is infact a discrimination and degrading of women in the society! There is nothing to do with liberalization at all! This carwash should not occur!
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI feel that this whole event is out degrade women and the modelling industry. Are those models desperate for money or something?
I do not mind if models are photographed naked for the sake of art. But, washing cars with their naked is totally disgusting and a disgrace to the women population. This allows men to increase their ego and ensure their control over women as seen for the case of prostitution.
Im appalled that some women actually supports such event. Liberalisation shouldn't consists of a gender's degardation.
